after a two-day closing workshop with unicef in delhi, this morning i packed up, hit the road again, and began my ten-day summer vacation.  first stop: agra, seat of the mughal empire and home to the taj mahal.

other than seeing some fabulous exemplars of islamic architecture, i also learned how carpets are made.  the factory i visited teaches village women how to do the knotting, provides them with a loom at home (subsidized by the government), as well as design charts resembling an elaborate paint by number.  it’s not a non-profit, but it provides them with a skill and some income of their own.

tomorrow i’ll visit the taj at sunrise, then bus to fatephur sikri in the afternoon, and train to varanasi overnight.
