waterfalls of hogenakkal

yesterday, keerthi and liz and i went traveling into the state of tamil nadu, to the south, in search of waterfalls.  lakshmi gave us directions – said it would take about an hour and a half.  auntie thought more like two and a half.  at 150km from hosa road, this seemed reasonable.  any guesses as to how long it actually took us to go 150km on well-paved roads with minimal traffic and without waiting to long to change buses?  five hours.  that’s right.  five.

that said, the journey took us through some spectacular scenery, giving me my first glimpse of the countryside and rural india.  hogenakkal is a sleepy tourist town nestled in a mountain valley which has been set aside as protected.  its forests, brimming with monkeys and fresh air, were a welcome sight/smell after two weeks of bangalore smog and traffic.  the waterfalls themselves were well worth the trip, especially on a hot day, and we regretted not bringing a change of clothes (otherwise we would have joined the guys in the waterfall shower).  we did manage to wade around up to our knees and find a nice sunny rock where we could dangle our feet in the water.  pictures tell the story better…
